Are you from a Romany or Gypsy background?

Tuesday 20 January 2026
14:00 to 18:00

Come and share tales, ideas and interests at a community event local to you, helping to mark the 100-year anniversary of the closure of Gypsy, Romany and Traveller Encampments across the New Forest later this year.

Drop-in sessions are taking place from 2-6pm at:

20th January – Fawley Royal British Legion, Blackfield
21st January – Thorney Hill Community Centre, Bransgore
28th January – Calmore Community Centre, Calmore
30th January – Greyfriars Community Centre, Ringwood

Working in partnership with local historians and event organisers: Tony Johnson and Steve Antczak, who are reviving and enhancing their popular heritage exhibition from 2023, and local Artist and Writer Rob Davis who will be working with young people to respond to oral histories gifted by local people.

What to expect from these drop-in events:

  • See a sample of the Tony Johnson photographic collection that will be toured in summer.
  • In conversation with Tony and Steve, have your say on how the events are marked e.g. Are there any crafts you would like to see demonstrated? Are there any musicians or bands who you can recommend/would like to see?
  • Share your stories and insights with Rob, who will be collating what he hears to generate artworks with young people from the Gypsy, Romany and Traveller communities, which will form three of the five exhibitions over the summer.
  • There will be drinks and light refreshments provided, as well as free parking.

Please get in touch with claire@energiseme.org if you have any questions about the events.
